Initiatives of Change USA and the Save Robert Green Coalition invite our clergy and friends to come to Tuesday Tubman- Setting Free Our Solutions Virtual Town Hall on Tuesday, October 19, 2021, 7 p.m. via Zoom.  This conversation will center around two previously incarcerated men who have returned home and are making significant contributions to their families and communities.

It is disturbing to hear recent television commercials about previously incarcerated men and women who are now free, and the story reads one continuous line of ill-fated attempts to build a new life and little or no success with making a positive, powerful difference after making mistakes earlier on in life.

If the truth be told, there are many individuals who have served their time in the criminal justice and are not relentless about their focus to be successful in turning their lives around and taking pride in renewing their relationships with their family members and friends.  They want to invest in strengthening their community ties to keep others from making the same poor choices that they did early in life.  If indeed the whole truth is told, there are many preciously incarcerated individuals who want to improve their life and the life of their family to achieve optimal success.   Quite frankly, many of the stories that are not being told are of strong-minded individuals who readily admit their previous mistakes and want to spend the rest of their lives making a reconciliation of sustained growth that can now support their families and communities.

Now is the time to take a look and listen to individuals who are successful at redefining their role in the family unit and society.  Please join us and hear the stories that are not being publicized.  Cultivate an understanding for yourself of the important work of getting incarcerated individuals who are ready to return to society in a supportive environment.  Together we will deepen our understanding of the important work…so that it is more inclusive as we are also learning.

We invite you to meet Richard W. Walker, Founder, CEO of Bridging the Gap in Virginia, a 501(c) 3 nonprofit organization founded in 2009, by Richard Walker. Richard has been a staunch advocate for Civil Rights for convicted felons, Expungement of Criminal background for All, Judicial and DOC Oversight; Earned Good Time sentence reform, Reinstating Parole, Eliminating Mass Incarceration and Solitary Confinement; Geriatric/Compassionate Release/Geriatric release; Decriminalizing Mental Health; Abolishing Solitary Confinement of inmates and other criminal justice issues. Bridging The Gap In Virginia is heavily involved in Environmental Justice, Renewable Energy employment training and Climate Change issues.

Our other guest for evening will be Christopher Rashad Green, who has made his life as a returning citizen, one of volunteerism, community service and activism.   Christopher explains that he continues to advocate for the rights of a better life for all individuals.  No matter what race, religion, or ethnicity.  Christopher is the subject of a compelling documentary, Sunlight Around the Corner, created, directed and produced by Alicia K. Aroche, and is currently up for an award in a France film festival and entered in several other film celebrations nationally and internationally.
