Intersecting History 2022

Initiatives of Change USA is joining together again with many of the fine arts and history institutions in Richmond to showcase our Second Annual Intersecting History Museum Crawl. Intersecting History is a coalition of museums and community historians that seek to intersect diverse histories to form a more just and inclusive public memory in an increasingly polarized society. The premier feature of the coalition is the annual “museum crawl” where attendees can go to their trusted museum of choice free of charge and get a free bus ride to all of the participating museums to intersect with new narratives they may not typically experience regarding race, justice, and public memory. The Museum Crawl will take place on Sunday, July 31, 2022, 10 a.m.-5 p.m. This year’s participating museums include the American Civil War Museum, the Holocaust Museum, The Valentine, Virginia Museum of History and Culture, and Virginia Museum of Fine Arts.

This year for the first time, Intersecting History will add a Community Conversation with all participating museums on Friday, July 29, 2022, 6 p.m. at the Virginia Museum of History and Culture. This will be an opportunity for Intersecting History partners to share with the public different perspectives on the role fine arts and history institutions play in increasing and expanding public memory

The conversation will feature Richmond’s own long time truth-teller, and Pulitzer-prize winning journalist Michael Paul Williams as he shares his reflections throughout the decades on our city’s progress, challenges, and journey towards embracing the truth about our history. As our city seeks to redefine itself with a new narrative following the revolutionary protests of 2020, come and hear each museum’s representative share their collective vision of how their institution is forging a new, more just, inclusive, and truthful public memory together.
