Created by Initiatives of Change USA, Intersecting History is a multi-level partnership with the following institutions: Virginia Museum of Fine Arts, Black History Museum & Cultural Center of Virginia, Virginia Museum of History & Culture, The American Civil War Museum, The Valentine, and The Institute of Contemporary Art at VCU.

Unfortunately, too often, our society suffers from a poverty of perspective due to still being raised under separate and segregated histories. To help meet this need, Initiatives of Change is beginning a new collaboration with local museums called Intersecting History.  This initiative stands between the gaps of history by connecting institutions to communities to deepen Virginia’s story with the truth-telling experiences and perspectives of those who have been persistently neglected and excluded. Intersecting History provides a unique opportunity to build out a collective journey and infrastructure of understanding for people raised under different histories to experience a more inclusive history together. This is a method of walking into our history fully with eyes wide open.

Join Initiatives of Change USA for Intersecting History’s first Museum Crawl on Saturday, December 14, 2019 from 10am-4pmCome at any time between 10am-4pm for as long as desired. In celebration of the permanent installation of Kehinde Wiley’s “Rumors of War” sculpture at the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts (launching on Dec. 10th), Intersecting History joins together a collaborative of Richmond’s museums to open their doors to the public free of charge to registered participants (normally valued at $40). On December 14th, visitors can take free bus transportation between participating museums to explore not only “Rumors of War” but also a showcase of designated curated exhibits and artifacts that intersect with the theme of this unveiling. Hop on and off free bus transportation provided at marked stops at all six participating institutions with complimentary parking at the VMFA and the American Civil War Museum for registered participants. The last bus pick-up/ drop-off will be at 4pm.

If we truly are to be One Richmond, we must continue to create space for more than just one narrative of our history. We welcome your presence at the Museum Crawl on December 14th from 10am-4pm as we work together to build an ongoing Intersecting History. (Tickets are required on Eventbrite.)
